What is fractional SEO?

Fractional SEO is a senior SEO lead who works part of the week for your company and owns the decisions: what to build, in what order, and how results get measured, while the work is done by them, your team, or both.

In plain terms

It works like a part-time CFO. You get senior judgment for a few days a month instead of a full salary. The hours matter less than the split of responsibility.

Every SEO setup answers two questions. Who decides what gets built? Who does the writing, the engineering and the publishing? Trouble starts when the answers drift apart, such as an agency that sends topic lists while nobody on your side gets the pages live.

How it compares

Option Who decides Who executes Works well when Wrong when
Founder does it You You You have few pages and a clear buyer Your hours are worth more elsewhere
Agency Agency strategist, within your brief Agency writers and specialists You need a team for strategy and output, and can judge the work Nobody on your side can review the work, or pages wait on your engineers
In-house hire Your employee The hire, plus your engineers SEO is a core channel with full-time work in it It is your first marketing hire and SEO is one of five jobs
Fractional SEO A senior person, part-time Them, your team, or a mix You need judgment and someone who gets pages shipped, not full-time hours You want articles by volume, or someone full-time in the building

None of these is right for every company. An agency with a strong team can beat a fractional lead on output. A good hire builds knowledge that stays with you.

Why it matters for a SaaS founder

The decision it informs is who should own SEO at your company right now. Fractional makes sense when you already have paying customers, nobody senior owns search, and you want someone who decides and ships without adding headcount.

Don't hire anyone yet if you can't say who buys your product and why. Fix that first. I compare the three options in more depth in agency, in-house or fractional SEO.

Example

Loglane is an invented 30-person API logging company. It has two freelance writers and a blog with steady traffic, but engineers ship new pages only when they find time, and nobody picks the topics.

A fractional lead would stop the blog queue, brief the writers on two comparison pages, get one page template from engineering, and report signups and payments per page each month. A production-only agency would add writers Loglane already has. An agency with strategy and publishing in scope could also solve the problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is fractional SEO the same as hiring a freelancer?

Not always. Many freelancers deliver a defined task, such as articles or an audit. Fractional means the person owns the priorities and the reporting, whether or not they also do the hands-on work.

How many hours does a fractional SEO work?

It depends on the agreement. Ask what gets decided, shipped and reported each month instead. That tells you more than an hour count.

When should we hire in-house instead?

When search has enough ongoing work for a full-time person and you want that knowledge inside the company. A fractional lead can also help you write that job description and hand over.
